THE Great Singapore Shopping Challenge, organised in conjunction with The Great Singapore Sale, returned with more teams and better prizes, ending with a first-runner up victory for the Malaysian team, Team 1, comprising 8TV Quickie host Rina together with Janarayson Nagarajah and Jack Ling.

This year, a total of 17 international teams were selected for a three-hour shopping spree across the famed shopping precincts of Singapore.

Two Malaysian teams were sent in by the Singapore Tourism Board to participate in the challenge. Team 1 were picked through a call-in contest on the 8TV Quickie, while the second team, which bagged 4th place, comprised Tay Seck Moi and Ng Shin Wern from Johor Baru, together with Gary from 8TV.

Each competing team were armed with SGD1,000 to complete a three-hour shopping spree on May 27. Teams had to use public transportation as they were challenged to pick the most “value-for-money” merchandise to garner the most in dollar savings.

As an additional bonus, all participating teams, including the winners, were awarded with the items purchased during the Challenge.

Team 1 acquired a total savings of SGD2504.34 but were beaten, albeit narrowly, by Team Sydney who made it back at the same time.

The Great Singapore Shopping Challenge 2006, organised by The Association of Shopping Centres (Singapore), at the invitation of the Singapore Retailers Association and supported by the Singapore Tourism Board continues until July 26 and is an annual event.
