Hot water ruling for hawkers

ALL food outlets in the Padawan municipality in Kuching must provide hot water for utensils like chopsticks, forks and spoons for patrons from Jan 1.

The requirement will be strictly enforced as a licensing condition, said municipal council chairman Tan Joo Phoi.

He said although the council encouraged eateries to provide hot water for customers to “sanitise” their chopsticks or spoons, not many have done it.

Such practice is not new as coffeeshops in smaller towns like Kapit have been doing it for a long time, he added.

“Customers should insist on being given hot water.”

Tan said a first-time offender would be fined RM25 and RM50 for the second time before the person's licence is suspended.
