WHEN the British returned to Penang on Sept 3, 1945, following the surrender of the Japanese, volunteers from the Eurasian community helped to keep the communication lines open.
Former sergeant John Henry Gates, 81, who was a British Royal Signals superintendent at that time, said they were “hopelessly understaffed” to carry out their duties.
