THEY were strapping young men in the early 1950s when they volunteered as home guards to protect their village, Kampung Jenjarom, from the Communists during the terrifying Emergency era between 1948 and 1962.
Today, many of them are grandfathers wearing the lines of life on their faces, living simple days and thankful they are still around to celebrate yet another National Day.
