Emphasises on authenticity, from its wait staff to its décor. It has about 100 Vietnamese delights, including the Banh Beo, which used to be served to the empress. Most of the dishes are served with fish sauce and its Vietnam coffee is served in a special percolator.

RIBLEE'S RESTAURANT & BAR, 11 Jalan SS23/15, Taman SEA, PJ (Tel: 03-7880 6828). Business Hrs: Mon-Fri, lunch (12.30pm-2.30pm); dinner (5pm-11pm). Weekends, dinner only (6pm-11pm). Non-‘halal’. A pleasant casual spot that serves a variety of signature steaks, pork and Western dishes with a tasty twist of Tex-Mex flavours. Known for its use of spices in its cooking.  

NEW ZEALAND NATURAL ICE CREAM, Ground floor Ikano Power Centre, Mutiara Damansara, PJ. Business Hrs: Daily (10am-10pm). All the products here, made in New Zealand, are made from 100% natural ingredients and are 97% fat free. There are 28 flavours that include local favourites. In the Asian region, the Green Tea flavour is a favourite. Most of the flavours have won the New Zealand Ice Cream Manufacturers Association's Gold Awards. 

SENJA BISTRO, Asian Heritage Row, 54 Jalan Doraisamy, Off Jln Sultan Ismail, KL (Tel: 03-2693 1918). Business Hrs: Daily (7am-2am). The bistro doubles as an art gallery, with the paintings and other cultural artefacts available for purchase. It features authentic Malay cooking representing all the states in the country. The menu is changed regularly, with house specials remaining, to offer variety. It does catering for private parties, dinners and lunches.  

BISTRETTO, F-0-4 Plaza Damas, Jalan Sri Hartamas 1, Sri Hartamas, KL (Tel: 03-6203 2092). Business Hrs: Mon-Sat (noon-10pm). Pork-free. The Swiss Mediterranean cafe combines healthy eating with flavourful food. Serves fresh salads, boutique pizzas and pastas. One of its signature dishes is Emence of Chicken Zurich Style. The outlet serves ice cream cocktails, waffles and crepes.  

RAHSIA, 13 Jalan Damai, KL (Tel: 03-2142 5555). Business Hrs: Tues-Sun (noon-midnight). Closed on Mondays. Pork-free. Good food and ambience are its core attractions. Located in a bungalow house. Offers indoor and outdoor dining at its landscaped garden. Oil lamps on each table present a romantic allure with classical jazz tunes in the background. Boasts a contemporary menu of nouvo French cuisine and trendy Asian dishes.  

COSMIC RESTAURANT, Ground Floor, The Maple Suite, No. 1, Changkat Raja Chulan, KL (Tel: 03-2026 3333 ext 110). Business Hrs: Daily (7am-11pm). Pork-free. The menu is associated with the planets, horoscopes or other elements in the universe. Its Italian pastas come with generous amounts of Parmesan cheese and there is a selection of gravy choices. If you crave for Oriental treats, Northern rice dish or Nasi Kandar is recommended. There are five types of set lunches available at RM15 nett each.  

KIM'S KOREAN RESTAURANT, Uptown 5, Jalan SS21/39, Damansara Uptown, KL (Tel: 03-7710 5103). Business Hrs: Daily, lunch (noon-3pm); dinner (6pm-10pm). Pork-free. Serves different types of grilled meats and seafood. To complement the meats are speciality drinks originating from Korea said to help with indigestion. Its herbal soups are recommended for those recovering from illnesses.  

NAK WON KOREAN RESTAURANT, Lot 48672, Hartamas Square, Jalan 23/70A, Desa Sri Hartamas, KL (Tel: 03-6201 3004 / 016-225 9800 ). Non-Halal’. Business Hrs: Daily (11am-11pm). Offers Charcoal Grilled BBQ with more than 20 other Korean authentic traditional side dishes or ‘ban chan’. Also known for its Cow Tongue BBQ, a favourite with Japanese diners.  

THE BAKERY UKAY HEIGHTS, No. 1 Jalan Chong Khoon Lim (off Jalan Kerja Ayer Lama), Ampang Jaya, Ampang, KL (Tel: 03-4260 1606). Business Hrs: Mon-Fri (8am-10pm); Sat (8am-6pm); Sun (9am-2pm). Modelled after the famed French and European bakeries, the outlet serves authentic French and European breads and pastries. English breakfast sets and speciality breads available on Sunday.

Serves pastries and buns and a variety of drinks. No preservatives. Items have a shelf life of only three days. Accepts orders and does deliveries for large orders.

Its main branch is in Segambut. Offers a sizeable menu comprising over 80 types of Chinese dishes. Busy both at lunch and dinner on weekdays. Known for its seafood-themed noodles and fish head curry. Economy meals served per set are also available.

Serves authentic Hong Kong restaurant dishes at value-for-money prices. New items are introduced on a regular basis. Caters to the office crowd in the day. Evenings and weekends see plenty of familiesand Hong Kong expatriates. A selection of desserts is available including its special order Pi Chu Leung Fun.

SOONG KEE RESTAURANT, No. 3 Jalan Silang, KL (Tel: 2078 1484). Business Hrs: Mon-Sat (11am-midnight). Closed on Sundays and Public Holidays. Non-‘halal’. Known for its springy and smooth beef balls. Famous too for its Hakka dishes and a variety of noodles. The meatballs are 100% beef but those who prefer tripe can have the beef balls replaced. The shop serves up a fiery vinegar chilli sauce mix that’s also homemade.  

MARK'S ASSAM LAKSA, Lot G213A, Ground Floor, Promenade, 1 Utama Shopping Centre Bandar Utama, PJ (Tel / Fax: 03-6273 5530 / 012-268 7108). Business Hrs: Daily (10am-10pm). Specialises in ‘laksa’ and authentic local recipes. The outlet is simple and comfortable, furnished with wooden tables and old-fashioned ‘kopitiam’ chairs.  

RESTORAN KAYU NASI KANDAR, No. 23-1 Jalan USJ 10/1, UEP Subang Jaya (Tel: 03-5621 2020 / 4767). Business Hrs: Daily, 24 hours. It has branches in Pusat Bandar Damansara, the KLIA Food Garden and in Giant Shah Alam. Serves Northern style food especially the authentic Nasi Kandar and Nasi Briyani.  

PANDAN LEAF RESTAURANT, Lot S28, 2nd Floor, 1 Utama Shopping Centre, Lebuh Bandar Utama, Bandar Utama Damansara, PJ (Tel: 03-7728 6078). Business Hrs: Daily (10am-10pm). Features a multi-ethnic concept with Penang Nyonya food as the main highlight plus other local favourites prepared home-style. Does not use pre-mixed spices. The owner mixes her own spices based on a traditional recipe. Nothing is pre-cooked.  

MEJAAKU CAFة AND RESTAURANT, F29 Level One, Maju Junction Shopping Centre, Jalan Sultan Ismail, KL (Tel: 03-2691 0818). Business Hrs: Daily (10am-10pm). Has a colonial setting. The outlet offers rare Sarawakian specialities, combining ethnic food and Western delights. There are many must-try here but house speciality is Mee Kolok. For a filling meal go for the variety of single rice dishes as well as Western dishes.  

MONTE'S RESTAURANT & WINE BAR, Lot OB2-G-U3A Ground Floor, Oasis Boulevard 2, Sunway Pyramid, No. 3 Jalan PJS 11/15, Bandar Sunway, PJ (Tel: 03-7494 4833). Business Hrs: Daily (11.30am–11pm). Serves set lunch daily from 11.30am to 3pm. Its fillet mignon and sirloin imported from New Zealand are bestsellers. Dishes come in generous portions. The menu has about 60 dishes with steak sauce Green Chilli Peppercorn. 

THE JOINT PUB AND GRILL STEAK HOUSE, No. 56 Jalan PJS 11/28A, Bandar Sunway, Subang Jaya (Tel / Fax: 03-5638 3063). Business Hrs: Daily, Mon-Fri (noon-1am); Sunday & Public Holidays (6pm-1am). Offers Western and local cuisines and a variety of drinks served at the bar. The interior has wooden panelling in simple design. Highly sought after dishes include Seafood Curry Laksa and Mexican delicacy Sizzling Fajitas.)

A venue for tasty local food, Western and Italian dishes. Also serves good local coffees. Its menu features a range of sandwiches, pastas, hearty main courses of Cantonese Fried Kuey Teow and Cajun Roast Chicken among others. There’s also Teo Chew Porridge.
