PETALING Jaya City Council (MBPJ) have joined forces with the Selangor Hockey Association (SHA) to prepare the men’s hockey squad for next year’s Malaysia Games in Kuching, Sarawak.

With the aim to gain competition exposure, the training squad – MBPJ-Sukma – are taking part in the Division One of the QNET-Selangor Hockey League.

SHA secretary P. Kuganesan said the players, representing MBPJ-Sukma in the QNET-SHL, would be part of their team for the Malaysia Games.

“We will also be scouting for new young talents in the league. The exposure gained in the league will certainly help the team in their preparation for the Malaysia Games. We will also be scouting for new talents in the league to be drafted into the Malaysia Games training squad,’’ said Kuganesan.

MBPJ-Sukma’s opening match in the league ended on a disappointing note as they were beaten by RAMD at the Tun Razak Stadium in Jalan Duta.

RAMD, with their superior fitness, were simply too good and scored a convincing 5-1 win over MBPJ-Sukma. RAMD’s scoring spree started in the 14th minute when Mohd Effendy Jamaluddin scored. Mohd Yazid Yahya made it 2-0 in the 19th minute.

After the break, in the 41st minute, Mohd Izwan Rodzi scored RAMD’s third goal. The fourth goal came in the 45th minute through Zaini Sarip while the fifth goal was scored by Mutasir Ali in the 47th minute.

MBPJ-Sukma’s consolation goal was scored by Muhd Shafirul Aqmal Mohamed in the 56th minute.

MBPJ-Sukma team manager Zainal Abidin Ismail, who is also the Selangor hockey team manager for the Malaysia Games, said they had assembled a group of juniors for the league.

“More importantly, we want the players to give their best against the seasoned team, which has several experienced players. The exposure will benefit these youths as they prepare for the Malaysia Games,’’ said Zainal Abidin.

In another Division One match last Sunday, defending champions UiTM started their campaign in the league with a hard-fought 4-2 win over Dolphins Young Guns.

National skipper Razie Abdul Rahim made his debut in the league with X-Matrix. However, he was on the losing end as Dolphins Young Guns scored a slim 3-2 win over X-Matrix.

In Division Two, PAUiTM continued their winning streak when they thrashed PDRM 7-1 in a Group A match while Highlander Hockey Club defeated Synergy Hockey Club 3-1.

This weekend, there will be a total of 19 matches. The women’s division will also start this weekend with UM Ladies taking on SMK Bandar Seri Putra at the KPM Hockey Stadium in Jalan Pantai on Saturday.

The league has also seen an increase in the number of spectators.

Kuganesan said about 200 hockey enthusiasts had witnessed the matches, at the KPM Hockey Stadium last week.

“We are pleased with the support from the hockey fans. We expect more supporters to come for the coming matches,’’ he added.
