KUALA LUMPUR Real Mulia FC will not give up their fight for the top spot in the FAM Cup competition.
KL Real Mulia, trailing Perlis by five points, kept their challenge alive with a hard fought 1-0 win over much fancied Megah Murni in a Group A match at the UPM Sports Complex in Serdang.
The only goal of the match came in the 41st minute when KL Real Mulia’s Mohd Zulkifli Effendi scored from a quick counter attack.
Megah Murni, after the passing away of coach K. Thaiyananthan last month, had R. Nallathamby taking over as the coach.
Following some dismal performances, the management decided to rest some of their senior players.
Nallathamby and team manager G. Gunabalan opted to start the match with young players.
The youngsters showed a lot of grit but failed to score from the chances that came their way.
Flanker P. Harish was swift and fast with his runs but was guilty of missing two sitters.
KL Real Mulia also did not have the services of suspended A. Puvanarajah and Muhammad Badrul Hisham.
KL Real Mulia coach Ahmad Yunus Aliff admitted the absence of both the players was sorely felt.
“Their absence affected our momentum. The players were quite cautious and found it difficult to perform up to expectations.
“But in the end we won and that is important,’’ said Ahmad Yunus.
Real Mulia stayed in contention for the top place in the 10-team table.
After the slim win, KL Real Mulia are second in the table with 32 points from nine wins, five draws and a defeat.
Perlis, the only unbeaten team in the competition, edged UKM FC 2-1, and stayed on top of the table with 37 points.
Despite trailing by five points, KL Real Mulia are determined to stake a claim for the top spot and will be looking for another win when they meet Negri Sembilan Prisons this weekend. Both Puvanarajah and Muhammad Badrul will return to KL Real Mulia’s starting 11.
Ahmad Yunus said they had to win their remaining three matches.
“We are not going to give up. Perlis also have three matches and we hope to see them falter in any of their matches.
“Incidentally, one of our remaining matches is against Perlis and that match could be a deciding tie. We will fight until the end,’’ said Ahmad Yunus.
In Group B, Malacca strengthened their claim for the top spot when they edged Airasia All Star 1-0. With 30 points from nine wins, three draws and a defeat, Malacca have a bright chance of qualifying for the final.
Malaysian Indian Sports Council –Malaysian Indian Football Association (MISC-MIFA), after a series of losses, regained their winning ways when they defeated KL MOF FC 2-0.
MISC-MIFA, like Malacca, also have 30 points but have played one match more. It will be an uphill task for MISC-MIFA to take over Malacca’s spot at the top of the nine-team table.
Malacca have a bright chance to increase their lead as they will be facing bottom placed Johor DT III this weekend. MISC-MIFA will take a break this week.
