A PROPOSAL to instal two new sets of traffic lights in Taman Ipoh Timur, Perak, is set to move forward after a lengthy planning process.

Ipoh Timur MP Howard Lee announced that the decision to instal the lights along the busy Jalan Perajurit followed two years of detailed discussions and assessments.

The plan was identified as the most effective way to manage the increasing traffic volume and improve safety along the stretch.

“We have listened to concerns and suggestions from the local community, including residents and shopkeepers, on how best to address the traffic issues here,” Lee said during a project briefing for residents.

The new signals will be placed at the junctions of Persiaran Perajurit 3 and Laluan Perajurit 1, a proposal first highlighted during a public town hall session in August 2024.

Lee emphasised the urgency of the project, saying, “I understand that there are still concerns and objections, but we cannot delay any longer.

“The longer we wait without taking action, the more accidents will occur,” he stressed.

The project, estimated to cost RM193,000, is slated for completion within 16 weeks.

Addressing fears of potential congestion, Lee said the system would be calibrated.

“The timing of the traffic lights will be set in a way that minimises any negative impact on the overall traffic flow,” he said.

He further assured the public that Ipoh City Council was prepared to make further adjustments to the system if the new traffic lights did not lead to noticeable improvement in road safety and traffic movement. — By IVAN LOH
