Sibu marked a significant milestone towards sustainable development in Sarawak with its first electric vehicle (EV) fast-charging station.
Sibu Municipal Council deputy chairman Mohammed Abdullah Izkandar Roseley said the Sarawak Energy Bhd (SEB) Gentari charging station represented an important step in supporting the state’s transition towards green and low-carbon mobility.
He said the 120kW direct current facility at Dataran Tun Tuanku Bujang Two was equipped with two bays, enabling users to enjoy significantly shorter charging times compared with conventional AC chargers.
“The station offers pay-as-you-go charging at a rate of RM1.40 per kilowatt-hour (kWh), making it suitable for both daily use and long-distance travel.”
Izkandar said the site was strategically selected near an SEB substation to ensure stable and reliable electricity supply.
He also revealed that several other locations around Sibu had been identified for future EV charging stations.
Izkandar expressed his appreciation to the SEB team for their efforts in driving the initiative.
He also thanked the Land and Survey Department for granting site approval and the local council’s public works and traffic committee for approving the use of parking spaces to support the development of EV infrastructure.
Payment can be made on a pay-as-you-go basis via the Setel application or by scanning the QR code provided on the charger.
The station is expected to serve as a catalyst for increased EV adoption in Sibu, in line with Sarawak’s aspirations towards sustainable and low-carbon development.
