SELANGOR residents still enjoy a high quality of life despite paying more for daily necessities than those in other states.
Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said that while food prices in Selangor were generally higher, residents were still able to afford them thanks to higher household incomes and living standards.
“If we were to compare with other states, it is undeniable that the prices of daily necessities are higher in Selangor.
“However, the quality of life and household incomes here are also higher,” he said when met during a walkabout at the Taman Melawati morning market in Taman Melawati, Hulu Kelang, on Saturday (Dec 27).
He was accompanied by former aide and Hulu Kelang state constituency coordinator Juwairiya Zulkifli, as well as officials from Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (MPAJ).
According to reports, Selangor recorded a median household income of RM9,983 in 2022, exceeding the national median of RM6,338.
Data from the Statistics Malaysia Department placed the state behind only Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya, which recorded median household incomes of RM10,234 and RM10,056, respectively.
However, Selangor also recorded the highest Basic Expenditure of Decent Living Index, according to the Cost of Living Indicators 2024 released by the Department earlier this month.
The index, introduced to measure the minimum level of expenditure required to maintain a decent standard of living, enabled comparisons across states, administrative districts, and state capitals.
Later that day, Amirudin visited other areas in Hulu Kelang, including AU1 and AU3 in Taman Keramat, to meet local communities and distribute school supplies.
He said the visits were to better identify their needs and monitor the state government's implementation of ongoing initiatives.
