Ageing does not necessarily mean slowing down – it can be a chance to rediscover one’s purpose and passion.

That was one of the messages disseminated during a World Mental Health Day programme at a mall in Petaling Jaya, Selangor.

Organised by Alliance for a Safe Community (Ikatan) and PPB Properties, with support from National Centre of Excellence for Mental Health (NCEMH), the three-day initiative carried the theme “Community: Supporting Mental Well-Being Together”.

Rather than viewing retirement as the end of a chapter, visitors were encouraged to see it as an opportunity to reconnect with their community, explore new interests and embrace life with renewed energy.

Throughout the event, visitors took part in talks and sharing sessions by mental health experts who covered topics like emotional resilience, active ageing and maintaining purpose after retirement.

The programme provided a safe and welcoming space for participants to discuss mental well-being, relationships and the importance of staying socially engaged.

There were also complimentary mental health support by professionals, health screenings including blood tests and BMI checks, as well as booths offering books, health supplements and information on home care services.

The event was launched by Ikatan chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye.

“Mental health is an important part of physical health, there is no health without mental health,” said Lee.

He also highlighted the importance of collaboration between the public and private sectors in breaking mental health stigma and nurturing a more compassionate and supportive society. — By M. JIWA PRIYAA
