SEVERAL government buildings in Petaling Jaya New Town, including the Court Complex, Chemistry Department, Forensics Building, Bangunan Persekutuan and the Road Transport Department (JPJ) may be relocated.

The proposed move from Section 52 to Section 51, near Jalan Tandang, is part of a public-private partnership (PPP) project under the Prime Minister’s Department, and included in the Draft Special Area Plan (RKK) for Petaling Jaya for sections 19, 51 and 51A.

Petaling Jaya mayor Mohamad Zahri Samingon said the public exhibition for the plan as outlined under Town and Country Planning Act 1976 (Act 172) began on Sept 26 and would continue until Oct 27 at Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) headquarters.

“During this time, stakeholders are welcome to provide their views and feedback,” he said.

Mohamad Zahri said MBPJ had previously carried out an early publicity programme from April 30 to May 30, 2024.

“We received 56 feedback forms covering matters such as land use rezoning, road and intersection upgrades, development control and urban planning guidelines.

“We also gathered input on Local Agenda 21, a proposed smart tunnel and the concept of privately owned public spaces.”

Following a review of the feedback – alongside input from Selangor government on the growth of the semiconductor and high-tech sectors – MBPJ decided that the industrial land use zoning in Section 51 would be maintained, said the mayor.

“The smart tunnel proposal was dropped due to feasibility issues.

“Open space zoning for Lot 95 will revert to industrial zoning, in line with national aspirations to position Malaysia as a semiconductor hub.

“The state government emphasised the need to preserve industrial zoning in Petaling Jaya to support future economic opportunities,” he said.

The mayor also noted that land parcels facing the Federal Highway were being proposed for commercial zoning, which would allow for service apartment projects.

The Draft RKK is a lot-based plan, covering aspects such as land use, traffic flow, public transportation as well as infrastructure and green space planning in line with Petaling Jaya’s goals of becoming a smart, sustainable and resilient city.

The Draft RKK study area spans 4.06sq km with current land use data indicating that Section 19 is mainly commercial with a population of 9,655 across 82ha, while both Section 51 (1,910 residents, 154ha) and Section 51A (12,540 residents, 170ha) are industrial.
