KUALA Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) is seeking feedback from the private sector on how to manage petty traders and hawkers.

Mayor Datuk Seri Maimunah Mohd Sharif said stakeholders would be invited to discuss the matter in two weeks.

The move, she said, was following Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s suggestion to her to find ways to improve the operations of petty traders and hawker complexes.

“I need ideas on how to improve the cleanliness of such operations without compromising on quality of the food sold,” she said.

DBKL has been stepping up efforts to manage petty traders, including intensifying enforcement against illegal operators.

Last May, it launched a major crackdown in Brickfields targeting those operating on public walkways for causing obstructions.

In April, the local authority initiated a regularisation process for “Rambo traders”, namely those operating without a licence.

Maimunah was speaking when launching the KLCC Sustainable September event at KLCC Park in Kuala Lumpur.

The event, the third edition, was organised by the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre Business Events Alliance (KLCCBEA) and KLCC Holdings.

Workers and business communities in and around KLCC participated in a fun run, Zumba and tree-planting exercise at the park, among other activities.

Maimunah also thanked KLCCBEA and KLCC Holdings for organising the programme that promoted a healthy lifestyle among urban folk.

KLCC Holdings group chief executive officer Datuk Salem Kailany said the event reflected the firm’s commitment towards sustainability.

“It is about reimagining how people live, work and connect in the heart of the capital.

“By embedding sustainability into everything we do, we are creating a greener and more liveable city,” he said.

Also present were KLCCBEA chairman John Burke and Urbanice Malaysia chief executive officer Norliza Hashim.

Separately, Maimunah said DBKL has set several objectives as part of its push towards achieving net-zero carbon emission by 2040.

They included ensuring 70% of travel in the capital are done via public transport, building 300,000 affordable homes and gazetting 4,700ha of green space.
