THE Pure Lotus Hospice of Compassion in Jalan Utama, Penang, is expanding with a new RM10mil building set for completion next February.
The facility will extend its compassionate care to homeless individuals and elderly residents requiring end-of-life support.
Pure Lotus chairman Venerable Lyan Shih said the milestone was made possible thanks to generous contributions from philanthropists, corporations and the state government.
“I thank our supporters, volunteers and donors, who have been the pillars of our home.
“We would not be where we are today without their unwavering support,” she said during the groundbreaking ceremony.
According to Buletin Mutiara, the new facility, located within walking distance of the current home, will be able to accommodate 33 patients.
It is meant to ensure that more individuals with life- limiting illnesses receive the care they need.
For now, the home cares for end-stage cancer patients who are poor or single with no caregivers or place to stay.
Lyan Shih also highlighted the resilience of the home’s cancer patients.
“Our environment promotes positivity, despite the challenges,” she said, while expressing appreciation to Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow for officiating at the groundbreaking ceremony.
Chow announced a RM100,000 contribution towards the construction of the new facility.
“With Penang’s ageing population, the need for quality palliative care has never been more urgent.
“We must prioritise the well-being of the elderly and those suffering from chronic and terminal illnesses,” he said.
He reaffirmed Penang government’s commitment to supporting Pure Lotus home and ensuring the welfare of vulnerable individuals.
He also acknowledged the importance of caring for the ageing population, highlighting that Penang had been formulating various policies on active ageing.
“The state will continue to assist the home and provide the necessary support to ensure the well-being of those under its care.”
Deputy Finance Minister and Tanjong MP Lim Hui Ying also contributed RM50,000 to the building fund through the Finance Ministry.
“I urge everyone to lend their support, whether through donations, volunteering or raising awareness.
“End-of-life care is not just a medical necessity. It is a moral responsibility,” said Lim.
She also praised the Pure Lotus team for its dedication and compassion in caring for those in need.
Also present were state youth, sports, and health committee chairman Daniel Gooi, state social development, non-religious and welfare committee chairman Lim Siew Khim, Jelutong MP RSN Rayer and Komtar assemblyman Teh Lai Heng.
