DBKL identifies alternative site for Hindu temple, assures no demolition

Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has identified a new location for the Dewi Sri Pathrakaliamman Temple, currently situated on privately owned land in Jalan Masjid India, Kuala Lumpur.

The local authority has assured that no demolition will take place, and the temple can continue operating as usual until the relocation process is completed, it said in a media statement.

This comes in response to concerns over a private developer’s proposal to build a mosque on the land, prompting DBKL to step in to facilitate a fair and transparent resolution while upholding religious harmony.

DBKL said while it acknowledged the proposed construction of a mosque on land owned by a private company at Jalan Masjid India, it would take steps to prevent discrimination against any community.

“The project is a proposal by the private company, which is the rightful owner of the land, and not by the government.

“Nevertheless, as the authority entrusted by the government, we have taken proactive steps to assist in finding the best solution for all parties involved. This approach also aims to prevent any form of discrimination against any community,’’ it said.

The land in question has drawn attention because a small portion of it currently houses the temple.

DBKL assures that every step taken aligns with the principle of religious freedom as guaranteed by the Federal Constitution.

“To ensure that Hindu devotees can continue their religious practices comfortably and harmoniously, we have identified a new location for the relocation of the affected place of worship.

“The relocation process will be conducted transparently and fairly, with discussions involving relevant stakeholders to ensure smooth implementation.

“DBKL is also committed to not carrying out any demolition of the temple structure at the current site. The temple will be allowed to continue its operations as usual until the relocation process is completed.

DBKL appreciates the cooperation of all parties in ensuring a smooth relocation process and urges everyone to continue fostering harmony and respecting the country’s religious diversity.
