THE Johor government is taking steps to ensure three road projects classified as “sick”, will be completed by the end of this year.
State works, transportation, infrastructure and communications committee chairman Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh said the state-funded projects are located in Gelang Patah, Kampung Sawah (Pontian) and Serom (Muar), and cost RM25mil in total.
“The state government decided not to initiate new road projects until issues with existing sick ones, caused by contractors failing to meet contract conditions, are resolved.
“We have gradually tackled this problem and now only three such projects remain,” he said
Mohamad Fazli said a new bridge project will start in Simpang Renggam this year to address traffic congestion and river flow issues in the area.
He added that proactive measures would be taken to prevent future projects from falling behind schedule.
Mohamad Fazli also said one roadwork project that was previously delayed had now been resolved.
He was referring to the 2.2km road expansion from Taman Kempas Utama to Kampung Maju Jaya in Kempas.
“The project to upgrade the two-lane road to four lanes cost about RM12mil.
“It is expected to be fully completed by Hari Raya Aidilfitri this year.”
He said the contract of the previous contractor was terminated in 2023 for failure to complete the work, adding that the project was re-tendered to a new contractor in December 2023.
The new contractor, he said, was instructed to ensure all supporting infrastructure, such as streetlights, were fully functional once the road is opened to the public.
