KOTA KINABALU: The long-awaited upgrade of the Panataran River Bridge in Kampung Malangkap, Kota Belud, from a wooden structure to a concrete two-lane bridge, is set to boost the local economy, benefiting over 4,000 residents and tourists in the area.

Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Development Minister, Datuk Ewon Benedick, said the new bridge is a much-needed facility for the people of Mukim Malangkap, which comprises five villages.

“The upgrade from a single-lane wooden bridge to a two-lane concrete bridge will undoubtedly improve accessibility for locals and visitors alike.

“With this new bridge, not only will residents have a safer and more comfortable crossing, but tourists will also find it easier to explore this village and experience its rural community-based tourism," he said after officiating the groundbreaking ceremony for the Panataran River Bridge upgrade on Jalan Malangkap Piasau, Kota Belud on Monday (Feb 10).

As the Kadamaian assemblyman, Ewon expressed gratitude to the Rural and Regional Development Ministry for approving an RM9mil allocation for the project.

Located on Sabah’s west coast, Kota Belud is known for its scenic landscapes, vibrant Bajau culture, and close proximity to Mount Kinabalu.

The area around Kampung Malangkap in Kota Belud offers diverse ecotourism attractions, including Polumpung Melangkap View Campsite, which provides scenic views of Mount Kinabalu, and Kg Melangkap Tiong ecotourism, known for its natural fish spa experience.

Other popular destinations include Kawa Kawa River for wildlife cruises, Bukit Bongol for hiking, the Tamu Market for cultural experiences, and Mantanani Island, a paradise for snorkeling and diving.

Meanwhile, Ewon hopes the project will be completed within the planned one-year timeframe and believes it will significantly enhance economic activities, especially in tourism and agriculture.

“This bridge will make it easier for tourists to visit the resorts here while also improving the transport of agricultural products.

“For years, farmers faced difficulties bringing in larger vehicles like lorries to transport their produce. With this upgrade, such challenges will be resolved, and I am confident the local economy — particularly in tourism and agriculture — will thrive,” he said.

Ewon also highlighted his long-term development plan for Kadamaian, which prioritises infrastructure, economic growth, and the community's needs.

He said he is confident that more similar projects would be introduced in the near future through discussions with other ministers.
