VISITORS to the newly upgraded Dataran Klang@Padang Chetty have complained about shoddy workmanship as the concrete pavers are wobbling when stepped on.
A regular user of the park, Mei Lee, 68, said some people had lost their balance while walking and jogging there and sustained minor injuries.
The former school teacher said she resumed walking at the park after construction works ended recently.
“I come here to exercise but the walk path with concrete pavers and interlocking bricks are loose and lopsided due to poor workmanship,” she said.
Mei Lee said after witnessing the dangers posed, she had avoided using the park.
Another parkgoer, Sivam Nadasen, 63, said he began using the park since it reopened, but found it disappointing with the uneven pavers and interlocking bricks.
“Last week, a youth had a nasty fall while running on the yellow concrete pavers which are uneven and wobbly.
“Rainwater also collects under the pavers and water splashes out when people step on it,” he said.
Klang Consumer Association president A. Devadass said Klang Royal City Council (MBDK) has failed to monitor the works effectively, putting park users at risk.
He called on MBDK’s Landscape Department to retain the contractor’s deposit until the defects are remedied.
He added that MBDK also needed to address soggy ground issues and replace the damaged solar lights affixed to concrete benches.
Devadass said for the safety of all park users, Dataran Klang@Padang Chetty should be closed until repairs are carried out.
The 1.34ha park next to the 151-year-old Sri Nagara Thendayuthapani temple, underwent upgrading work from last September to Jan 15.
It was supposed to have been completed on Nov 18 but faced delays.
The park’s transformation was made possible through RM500,000 in funds from the National Landscape Department.
An MBDK spokesperson said the council was taking the matter seriously and would inspect the park.
“Despite the project completion, there is a defect liability period.
“We will call the contractor to make good as per the contract,” said the officer.
