Repairs for Sg Besar bunds damaged by high tide

WORKS to restore bunds at Sungai Besar in Selangor, which were damaged during the high tide phenomenon middle of last month, are ongoing.Selangor infrastructure and agriculture committee chairman Izham Hashim said the tide rose to about 6m and “damaged bunds caused water to flow into surrounding areas”.

Bunds along parts of Selangor’s coastal areas range in height from 4.3m to 6m.

On Oct 18, a total of 40 victims from 13 families in Kampung Tanjung Medan, Sabak Bernam, were moved to a temporary evacuation centre (PPS) at SK Binjai Jaya following floods after the high tide.Selangor Northern Zone 7 Fire and Rescue Department chief Samsol Maarif Saibani said seawater overflowed the bunds at about 4am.

Izham said initial repair works had been done to restore the integrity of the embankment.“Estimated cost for the works is still being assessed by Selangor Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID).“The high-tide phenomenon project, which includes addressing coastal erosion and strengthening the embankment in Kampung Seri Sentosa, Sekinchan, amounts to RM2.96mil,” he disclosed.

He said there might be changes in project costs due to additional work outside the original scope.The high-tide phenomenon from Oct 17 to 20 impacted coastal areas of Sabak Bernam, Sekinchan and Kuala Langat.Bund upgrades that are ongoing in Sabak Bernam include Kampung Seri Sentosa, Pantai Batu 23, Sungai Haji Dorani, Sungai Apong and Sungai Lang.
