A NOTICE purportedly offering reserve land for rent along Jalan Kuang Gunung, Kepong, has irked nearby residents who fear they could soon lose their green lung.

The advertisement with the words “for rent” and a contact number was placed beneath a Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) signboard indicating that the plot was an open or green space for recreational use.

Laman Damai Apartment resident Low Siang Wah, 70, said the vacant land was not suitable for development as the area was densely populated.

“If commercial shoplots were to be built here, it would mean more traffic in the area.

“Most residents here would not want that,” he said.

Local activist Yee Poh Ping said residents wanted DBKL to act against those behind the notice.

“Taman Kepong is a residential area that has been around for more than 50 years and the land has been designated as a green lung.

“It is reserved solely for recreational use and we hope that DBKL can build a park here for residents,” he said during a press conference at the site.

Yee said he had checked with DBKL, and it confirmed that the advertisement was illegal.

“DBKL had removed the advertisement on Monday but another board with the same details was put up again on Tuesday.

“One of the residents even called the number on the advertisement and was told the land could be rented for 50sen per square foot, amounting to about RM37,000 for the entire plot.

“Residents do not want the reserve land to be used for anything other than a children’s playground or recreational facilities,” he said.

Yee added that DBKL should develop the land as a public park as the residents in the area did not have a recreational space.
