RESIDENTS of two charitable homes in Mentakab were entertained by a group of well-wishers in conjunction with the Chinese New Year celebration.
About 50 residents of Kampung Baru Temerloh Old Folks Home and Mentakab Welfare Association Home for the Elderly clapped and sang along to festive songs to usher in the Year of the Dragon.
They were also treated to homecooked dishes as well as mandarin oranges and festive biscuits.
The group were members of the Temerloh Dancing Association, led by its president Datuk Seiko Chew Kim Pong.
Chew said this year, the association decided to bring some festive cheer to residents of old folks homes.
“Besides giving out ang pow, our members also performed simple dances and sang Chinese New Year songs.
“It’s heartwarming and fulfilling to see the residents breaking into big smiles while standing up and joining in to sing the tunes,” he said, adding that the visit was the first community-related programme organised by the association this year.
Chew said in addition to promoting dancing and singing as a hobby, the association wanted to encourage the people, especially the younger generation, to love and respect their parents and elderly folk.
He said filial piety was a tradition and noble value which must be preserved for subsequent generations.
“Showing respect and appreciation to senior citizens should be nurtured for their contributions in their prime years.
“We hope other associations and non-profit organisations can do their part to bring festive cheer to the less fortunate in other areas nationwide,” Chew said.
Also present at the programme was Mentakab assemblyman Woo Chee Wan who, together with Chew, distributed the red packets and mandarin oranges to residents.
