PETALING JAYA: Five new faces were among the 21 councillors sworn in to serve the 2024-2025 term with the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ).

Among the five is 23-year-old Loh Y Lun, the youngest to be sworn in Selangor, who is also special assistant to Kampung Tunku assemblyman Lim Yi Wei.

The other four new councillors are Kusaaliny Mahendran, Tan Wei Kiat, Mohamed Hamka Mohamed Juma and Nurashikin Ali. Kusaaliny, Tan, and Loh are from DAP while Mohamed Hamka and Nurashikin are from Amanah.

Sixteen councillors were appointed and sworn in at a ceremony held at Dewan Bunga Tanjung at the MBPJ headquarters before deputy mayor Aznan Hassan.

Councillors who were reappointed comprised Bryan Ng Yih Pin, Chan Pak Keung, Ermeemarianna Saadon, Mohd Iksan Mohamed Din, Norah Mansor, Ahmad Akhir Pawan Chik, Sugumaran R. Anamalai, Suriase Gengiah, Tang Fuie Koh, Terence Tan Teck Seng, Wong Swee Sang, Leong Chee Cheng, Yip Sean Yi, Quratulain Atiqah Norzahirul Anuar, Nalina Nair, and Ong Yew Thai.

MBPJ said in a statement it is hoped that through the combination of the new and reappointed MBPJ councillors, they will work together to achieve the goals and focus of Petaling Jaya as a sustainable and resilient city by the year 2030.

"In selecting and appointing the councillors, the Selangor government has issued the Selangor Local Authority Councillor Management Guidelines in 2021, including selection criteria for the appointment of councillors, establishment of committees, handling of meetings, performance evaluation, prohibitions and enforcement dates.

"Councillors represent the local authority and state government in delivering initiatives and programmes to the local community. They are also responsible for the community's interests in their locality zones.

"Councillors also play a role in bridging the gap between the state government and the community, therefore enhancing service delivery to achieve the state government's vision, mission and aspirations," it said.
