Mooncake boxes feature artist’s take on light and darkness

No stranger to the paintbrush and colours, CN Liew has been an artist and calligrapher for the better half of his life.

His works have taken him to various places, including the Art SG in Singapore, the largest art fair in South-East Asia.

Earlier this year, Liew exhibited his latest work there, an abstract painting that features three main colours – black, white and red.

The image, he said, was a visual metaphor of how darkness and light coexist and balance each other.

“It reminds me of the unpleasant experience of the movement restrictions during the Covid-19 pandemic and we were isolated at home.

“However, we made it through and are now looking forward to celebrating the Mid-Autumn Festival again with our loved ones,” he said during a media preview of Four Seasons Hotel Kuala Lumpur’s mooncake promotion.

Liew’s creative vision had caught the hotel’s attention, so efforts were made to feature his painting on the hotel’s mooncake boxes and paper bags.

The bags will be given to customers who buy the mooncake box set.

At the preview, guests sampled a variety of different mooncakes.

Four Seasons Hotel Kuala Lumpur regional marketing director Nelson Hilton and general manager Blaise C. Montandon were among those at the event.

Liew hoped that through the sale of the mooncakes, more people can enjoy the artwork during this year’s Mid-Autumn Festival.

“The blending of the colours is meant to symbolise a spirit of togetherness and harmony between loved ones and friends,” he added.

The mooncakes come in baked and snow skin varieties, priced from RM42 to RM78 each.

Among the flavours available for baked mooncakes are Pu Er Tangerine with Lotus Paste, Lotus Seed Paste with Single Yolk and White Lotus Seed Paste.

For snow skin mooncakes, the highlights are Homemade Musang King Durian and Homemade Bird’s Nest with Black Sesame and Almond.

The pastries are also available in a box set, with each box containing eight cakes.

Customers can mix and match the flavours.
