State polls: Flood mitigation important, says Muda's Batu Tiga candidate

SHAH ALAM: Flood mitigation is an important issue for voters in Batu Tiga here, says Malaysian United Democratic Alliance Party (Muda) candidate Saiyidah Izzati Nur Razak Maideen.

She said this is because Sungai Anak Damansara flows through the area, affecting those living in low-lying areas.

Sayidah then added that the areas that see major flooding are Taman Batu Tiga, Kampung Lombong, Kampung Baru Hicom and Kampung Lanchong Jaya, and added that several layers of government agency cooperation is needed to address the long-standing issue

“A coordinated effort must be made to establish standards for flood plain mapping, coming up with ideas for controlling surface runoff and also plans for disaster assistance,” she said.

On Dec 17 and 18, 2021, Batu Tiga was affected by flooding due to continuous rains during this period.

“We need a holistic flood management programme. We should not delay the co-ordination of flood management plans for Batu Tiga, especially given the impact of recurring flooding on households within the area,” said Sayidah.

Sayidah said that during the major floods in 2021, she gathered 150 volunteers through a non-governmental organisation to offer aid to the people in the aftermath of the floods.

Her team of volunteers had also collected about RM30,000 to help families affected during the Covid-19 pandemic.

“I grew up in an area that flooded and I feel it is time to bring the matter to a political platform," added the Muda Shah Alam Parliament deputy chief.

Contesting in the state elections in a three cornered fight for Batu Tiga are Sayidah, private university adjunct associate professor Danial Al-Rashid Haron (PH-Amanah) and Datuk Seri Rina Harun (PN-Bersatu).
