WORKS on Priority One (Phase One) of the Gurney Wharf project are scheduled for completion in May this year, said Jagdeep Singh Deo.
The Penang local government, housing, town and country planning committee chairman said the project’s construction had reached the 50% mark.
Once it is ready, Priority One will have facilities including children’s playground, skate park, viewing deck (south vantage point), public toilets, pedestrian promenade, traders’ kiosks, recreational park, landscaped areas and open carpark.
Jagdeep said the place would become an icon of Malaysia once the whole project was completed in 2025.
“We have two phases, Priority One and Priority Two, going on at the same time. The laying of topsoil is almost done in some areas in Priority One.
“There are many components that are moving at a rapid pace.
“The Penang government is committed to ensuring the project is delivered.
“The most important thing is that this green lung is for the benefit of the people.
“This is part and parcel of our Penang 2030 vision to become a family-focused, safe and green state,” Jagdeep told Buletin Mutiara after a site visit.
The ground-breaking ceremony of the RM200mil Gurney Wharf project was held on May 14 last year.
Over 53ha of land have been reclaimed, of which 16ha will be used for public facilities.
Jagdeep said some components might be added to Priority One and Priority Two, adding that an announcement would be made after discussions with stakeholders.
Under Priority Two, the features include additional landscaped areas, recreational parks, kiosks, a hawker centre, a viewing deck (north vantage point), public toilets, multi-storey carparks, open parking lots, a beach area and boardwalk plus water garden.
A drainage system will also be installed.
Also present at the press conference were Chief Minister Incorporated deputy general manager Datin S. Bharathi, Public Works Department civil engineer Goh Kiet Rhee, consultants, architects and contractors.
