AN AFTERNOON downpour did not deter the stream of visitors from making their way to the Gua Damai Extreme Carnival in Batu Caves, Selangor.
The two-day event saw over 3,000 visitors taking part in various activities such as rock climbing, flying fox and abseiling.
The programme was to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Selayang Municipal Council (MPS).
Council president Mohd Yazid Sairi said the event was in line with Selangor government’s aspiration to promote extreme sports as a tourism product.
“We also hope to encourage Selayang folk to participate in physical activities,” he said in a statement.
Also featured was a paintball championship that saw 40 teams taking part, as well as slackline and tree climbing for children.
There was also a base-jump event which attracted 14 participants from Indonesia, Australia, the United States and South Africa.
Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, when opening the event, said plans were being made to build more facilities at the park.
“We are looking to add more signboards, as well as toilets near the cave entrance.
“Before this, the costs for such facilities were borne by the council, but the state government can help too,” he said.
It was the seventh edition of the carnival, which was last held in 2019.
The recent event was a collaboration between MPS and Tourism Selangor.
Visitors were delighted to win home appliances in the lucky draw event.
Located in Kampung Wira Damai, the Gua Damai Extreme Park features a climbing site with more than 120 bolted routes suitable for new climbers.
The area is part of 20 geosites that are undergoing evaluation to be gazetted as part of the 112,955ha Gombak-Hulu Langat Selangor Geopark.
