The Ipoh tree at D.R. Seenivasagam Park in Ipoh has toppled over.
THE iconic Ipoh tree at D.R. Seenivasagam Park in Ipoh, Perak has fallen.
An Ipoh City Council spokesperson said the tree fell on the morning of Aug 31 and damaged the structure surrounding it.
“The tree fell due to rotting in its roots that was not visually detectable from the surface.
“The tree is estimated to be over 30 years old,” he said.
In April 2017, another Ipoh tree at the 100-year-old Ipoh Railway Station Square fell during a storm.
A new tree was later planted at the square on February 2018.
Scientifically known as antiaris toxicaria, the tree is what gave the city its name.
It takes 20 years to mature and is capable of reaching 40m in height and its sap is highly toxic.
The spokesperson said there were still a few of the Ipoh trees left in the city.
One of the Ipoh trees, he said, was located on Persiaran Sultan Azlan Shah at Taman Lapangan Terbang.
“The city council is planning to plant a replacement tree at the park using a seedling, just like how it was done at the railway station square,” he added.
