COASTAL areas in Selangor are on alert as authorities have been told to be prepared to respond to flash floods that may occur due to the high tide at 7.41am on Wednesday (Jan 5).
Selangor Infrastructure and Public Amenities, Agriculture Modernisation and Agro-Based Industry Committee chairman Izham Hashim said floods were possible if continuous rain coincided with the high tide.
“Over the past three days the high tide that began on Sunday (Jan 2) until early Tuesday morning (Jan 4) was under control as there was no rains or strong wind. We hope the same tame affair on Wednesday,” he said.
On Tuesday, Port Klang Fire and Rescue Station chief Razif Mohmad Haris said the tide rose to a maximum of 5m as water along the coastal areas was much calmer and did not breach the bunds.
A check by StarMetro found that water levels were behind the bunds at Jalan Syahbandar (Foreshore Road) and the tide receded quickly.
“Our men stationed at the Port Klang coast noted that the sea was calm and there was no major flooding,” he said.
Razif added that the bunds along Klang’s coast at Telok Gong, Pulau Ketam in Port Klang as well as Jetty Tok Muda and Sementa in Kapar were in good condition and held up against the strong water pressure.
Additionally, several members of Klang District Civil Defence, Klang Public Works Department, Port Klang Fire Station, and Klang Municipal Council’s Swift Action Squad (Pantas) were present to monitor the high tide situation at the Port Klang jetty.
Klang district officer Mohd Faizal Abd Raji said the department had reminded those living near rivers and coastal areas to be vigilant, especially if it rained continuously.
Meanwhile, Kuala Langat Municipal Council president Datuk Amirul Azizan Abd Rahim said coastal areas in the district were temporarily out of bounds to the public for safety reasons.
“Areas closed off to the public are Pantai Kelanang, Pantai Baru Morib, Pantai Morib, Pantai Batu Laut, Pantai Cunang, Taman Harmoni Morib, Istana Bahagia Morib and Tanjung Sepat Jetty," he said.
“The food courts and traders’ kiosks in the areas are also closed,” added Amirul.
