Four-day virtual career fair aims to fill up 5,000 vacancies

A total of 56 companies will take part in the Virtual Career Fair 2021 from Aug 26 to 29 that will showcase various job opportunities.

CLOSE to 5,000 jobs will be offered by 56 companies in Penang during the Virtual Career Fair 2021.

Themed ‘Explore, Connect and Get Hired’, the four-day fair will be held from Aug 26 to 29.

It will be held from 10am to 4pm daily.

The participating companies are ViTrox Corporation Berhad, Hotayi, Flex, Osadi, Keysight Technologies, Plexus and many more.

The initiative is organised by Penang Youth Development Corporation (PYDC) in collaboration with Seberang Prai City Council, Social Security Organisation and Colla Team by Big Domain.

PYDC general manager Dr Gwee Sai Ling said many people had been hit hard by the global pandemic which has caused growth to be uncertain and the economy to become stagnant for over a year now.

She said according to the Department of Statistics, the number of unemployed graduates had increased.

This year alone, she said, the number reached 202,400 people, compared to the whole of 2019 that saw 165,200 people out of jobs.

“I believe this is the right way forward as we come together to hold a virtual career fair,” she said at the fair’s launch online recently.

Gwee said to prepare job seekers, especially fresh graduates or students looking for internships, PYDC would also organise a two-day Career Readiness Workshop on Aug 21 and 22 prior to the Virtual Career Fair 2021.

State youth and sports committee chairman Soon Lip Chee said in line with the ‘Youth For Future’ initiative, the state, through PYDC, organised several programmes to empower youth in economic, social and self- development.

“Our youth will get better exposure as the career fair will showcase various job opportunities from well-known companies in Penang.

“We thank all our partners and we shall work as a team,” he said.

Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers Penang chairman Datuk Jimmy Ong, who was present at the launch, said many companies were still recruiting workers to reinforce and restructure their businesses in preparation for the post- pandemic period.

Others at the launch were Penang Socso northern region head (Employment Insurance System Division) Mohd Zulhabri Abdul Halim, Big Domain CEO Henry Tye, Penang Chinese Chamber of Commerce Young Entrepreneur Section chairman Leon Lee, Small and Medium Enterprises Association northern region chairman Calvin Kwan and Skybi Operation vice-president Ng Kai Lin.

The fair will also feature virtual career booths, career assessment and counselling sessions, talks by Socso on employment services and MyFutureJobs portal, live industrial talks and more.

There will also be a lucky draw session and live interview session with the employers.

All workshops will be conducted by professional speakers while the career talks will be delivered by professionals.
