Few customers return to Pasar Taman Megah after virus scare

IT WAS a slow day at Pasar Taman Megah SS24, Petaling Jaya, despite most stalls reopening for business.

Some of the traders said people might still be reluctant to shop at the market after it was shut down last month when a vegetable trader tested positive for Covid-19.

Traders said they missed the days when they had thousands of customers visiting the market on a daily basis, while hundreds still made a beeline there even in the early days of the movement control order (MCO).

Petaling Jaya mayor Datuk Mohd Sayuthi Bakar said he stationed several of his officers at the market to enforce social distancing and other safety measures.

“We don’t want any new clusters similar to what is happening in other places in the country.

“The public must continue practising all these new habits such as keeping their hands clean all the time, wearing face masks and not crowding in public spaces, ” he said.

Flower seller N.Balachandran said it was a depressing sight to not have a bustling market.

He said under normal circumstances, the market could attract over 2,000 visitors a day.

“There is fear among the public. We hope everything will return to normal by the end of the week. Most businesses are not doing well but hopefully things will recover soon, ” he said.

Balachandran added that the market had taken precautionary measures and the public should not worry.

“Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) officers take people’s temperature and record their phone numbers, ” he said.

Nasi lemak and snacks seller Lulu said although there were fewer people at the market, she felt safer.

“I think if we have a smaller crowd it is better for everyone too as we can practise social distancing, ” she said.

Meanwhile, egg seller Chong C.K. said some of his customers called him before heading to the market.

He said this way he could prepare in advance and reduce their waiting time.

Customer Lim S.K said he came from Ara Damansara because the produce is fresh and cheaper compared to supermarkets.

He said he would continue going to the market and take the necessary precautions.
