MUSLIM converts in Melaka will get higher cash aid to help them prepare for Hari Raya, says Chief Minister Adly Zahari.
He said contributions have gone up to RM450 for adults and RM150 for children compared with RM350 and RM50 respectively last year.
There are 2,400 eligible adult recipients and 100 children, said Adly, adding that the amount distributed totalled RM1.04mil.
He said the increase was in line with the higher tithe collections made last year.
Adly said the collection increased by RM2.2mil to RM87.8mil compared with RM85.6mil in 2017.
“The contributions are channelled via the Melaka Islamic Religious Council to ease the burden of the people making preparations for Hari Raya,” he said at a Ramadan breaking of fast event.
He said the contributions would be distributed to those qualified in stages before the festive season begins.
For a start, he said 304 recipients comprising 286 adults and 18 children in the Hang Tuah Jaya parliamentary constituency received the contribution amounting to RM131,400.
Adly added that the state government hoped the contributions would increase further this year. — By SARDI MAHORM
