POPULAR Malaysia is holding its first Popular Mega Bookfair in Selangor.

The fair, happening from Aug 25 to Sept 3 at the Sunway Pyramid Convention Centre (SPCC) in Petaling Jaya, will cover an exhibition area of 4,645sq m.

Books of different genres in English, Chinese and Malay languages will take up half of the exhibition floor. There will also be miscellaneous items such as stationery, music, gadgets and IT goods.

According to Popular Book Co (M) Sdn Bhd business development general manager Siew Sheue-Liang, the event is an extension of Popular’s well-known BookFest expo – said to be one of the biggest annual book expos in the region.

“The BookFest is our signature event that takes place in Kuala Lumpur annually. It is much bigger in terms of size.

“The Mega Bookfair, however, is being held for the convenience of the surrounding catchment area including the population in Subang Jaya, Petaling Jaya and Puchong,” said Siew.

He said the fair expected about 100,000 visitors over the 10 days, much like the good turnout recorded at its Mega Bookfair that took place in other cities in the country.

To be held for the first time in Selangor, Siew said the fair would have something for everyone.

“It is aimed at inculcating the love of reading among Malaysians from all walks of life.

“Learning is a process that takes us from the cradle to the grave; it’s never too late to get started on a good habit,” he said.

The announcement of the upcoming book fair was held at Sunway University in Petaling Jaya.

During the launch, Sunway University vice-chancellor Prof Graeme Wilkinson said the university encouraged its students to visit the fair to broaden their horizon through reading.

“These days, we do not use physical books enough.

“For many people, reading is only confined to mobile devices; they look at posts, tweets and blogs.

“It is a problem when you are only getting snippets of news and bite-size information.

“It does not foster serious thinking, we’re become dimmer when we rely too much on them,” he expressed.

Prof Wilkinson said books were fundamental to developing ideas, arguments and concepts through all its pages.

“The complexity of that expands your mind and your ability in language,” he noted, adding that he was a firm believer of the saying, “A book a week, keeps your brain at its peak”.

Prof Wilkinson added that Sunway University had become a publisher of books under Sunway University Press, and a few titles would be publicised at the upcoming fair, including a Penang Hokkien Dictionary written by one of the university’s former lecturers.

“With the many titles we’ll be producing in the years to come, we hope we can continue working with Popular,” he said.

On top of books and merchandise, the Mega Bookfair will also feature different activities, including talks and sharing sessions, cooking demonstrations, the “Little Eco Warriors” Recycling Carnival, guest appearances of authors and artistes as well as on-ground contests.

There will also be offers, members’ rewards, purchase-with-purchase, daily specials, as well as other perks tied up with selected Sunway Pyramid food and beverage tenants.

Popular will be extending their Members’ Preview Day on Aug 25 to Sunway Group staff members, Sunway Pals members as well as Sunway University students, whereby they will enjoy same benefits as Popular Cardmembers.
