Raising eco awareness in schools

Idris giving out certificates of appointment to primary and secondary schoolchildren who will be participating in the first phase of the Eco-Schools 2017 programme.

MELAKA: The state government is embarking on the Eco-Schools 2017 programme to raise awareness on the importance of protecting the environment among students.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Idris Haron said it would involve 314 primary and secondary schools in Melaka and would be carried out in stages in cooperation with Green Growth Asia, WWF-Malaysia and the Melaka Education Department.

“It is in line with making Melaka a green techology state by 2020,” he said after launching the programme here.

Also present were executive director and chief executive officer of WWF-Malaysia Datuk Dr Dionysius Sharma and Green Growth Asia executive director Balamurugan Ratha Krishnan.

Eco-Schools is a global programme engaging millions of children across 64 countries, making it the largest school programme in the world.

For more than 20 years, Eco-Schools empowered children to drive change and improve their environmental awareness through the same simple seven-step process that had been used successfully across the world.
