FOUR traders along Jalan Cempaka 8 in Taman Cempaka are struggling with the compounds issued to them for running their businesses illegally.
Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (MPAJ) fined them four times respectively in the past month.
After paying the kiosks a visit and understanding their concerns, Cempaka assemblyman Datuk Iskandar Abdul Samad said many of them were forced to run such businesses to make ends meet as they are usually from low-income families.
“Some of them have it worse, as they only have a single stall as their source of income,” he said when visiting the kiosks to understand the complaints of the traders.
“MPAJ should do its best to conduct a survey among the traders to understand their socioeconomic status and needs before punishing them,” said Iskandar.
“The local council should give them the opportunity to run the businesses, especially for those who depend on their business as the sole source of their income.”
However, Iskandar said the traders too should do their part and apply for the licence to trade.
The licence fee is RM48 per year and the cost for typhoid injection and cleanliness courses is less than RM200, he added.
He also suggested that MPAJ do their best to beautify the area for the benefit of the people.
Along the same row of shops, there are six others that own a licence and pay a rent of RM5 per session to MPAJ.
There are three designated sessions per day - in the morning, afternoon and evening.
