THE PERAK government has yet to make a decision on the replacement of Datuk Seri S.K. Devamany as State Assembly speaker.
Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir said the matter will be discussed with the prime minister soon. This comes after Devamany’s recent appointment as a deputy minister in the Prime Minister’s Department.
“A few names have been brought up by Barisan Nasional component parties for the position so far, but the final decision will only be made after the discussion with Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
“Only then, will we table this at the State Assembly sitting. The names proposed will all be at the discretion of the respective party presidents as well,” he told a press conference at his Hari Raya celebration at his official residence at Jalan Raja Dihilir here on Wednesday.
On a statement made by Perak MIC Chairman Datuk V. Elango, who said he hoped that an MIC candidate would be chosen again as speaker, Zambry said the idea is subject to discussion.
“As a coalition, Barisan Nasional always practises consensus on appointments in the government administration.
“MIC and its community will be represented in the administration, just like the other communities, because it is our responsibility to ensure all people are equally represented,” he said.
On the resignation of Datuk Seri Ahmad Husni Hanadzlah from all of his party posts, including Perak BN deputy chairman and Tambun Umno division head, Zambry, who is state Umno chief, said he respects Ahmad Husni’s decision to do so.
“The posts he leaves vacant are a party issue, and we will discuss the next step with our party president as well,” he said.
