On the first day of Syawal, Muslims all over the world will be celebrating Hari Raya Aidilfitri, a day that marks the end of a whole month of fasting during Ramadan.

Family and friends gather to seek and give forgiveness, enjoying the togetherness as well as all kinds of festive dishes. But, not everyone is able to celebrate it like most people.

With that in mind, Sunway Putra Mall brought joy and cheer to 60 underprivileged children through its “Food Bank” campaign in conjunction with the festive season.

The campaign was organised in collaboration with Touching Lives Club Kuala Lumpur and Selangor. This campaign is aimed at encouraging the public and shoppers to donate non-perishable food items to the less fortunate.

Representing Sunway Putra Mall was marketing manager Melissa Hashim and Touching Lives Club Kuala Lumpur and Selangor founder Raymond Chin, who presented essential items such as rice, cooking oil, Milo, packet drinks, biscuits and toiletries to Pusat Jagaan Lambaian Kasih Sungai Penchala during their visit to the home in Petaling Jaya.

The children, 30 girls and 30 boys aged between seven and 12 years then took part in an art-and-craft session, and were thoroughly entertained. And much to the children’s delight, volunteers from the mall helped to decorate the home’s multipurpose hall with homemade ketupat casings in preparation for the coming Hari Raya.

This initiative is in line with Sunway’s value of making positive social impact through corporate social responsibility (CSR) efforts.

“As this is a continuous initiative by us at Sunway Putra Mall, we hope the public will continue to support us in donating food items for the less fortunate.

The donations, no matter how big or small, will make a huge difference to the lives of these individuals and families,” said Melissa.

Since the launch of the campaign, a total of RM10,000 worth of food items have been collected and this includes donations from Fitrah Al-Hajj, Marugame Udon, MBG Fruitshop, Friends of Burger and The Chicken Rice Shop.

All donations will be distributed to the homes in need, with the help of Touching Lives Club KL and Selangor.

The public can still show their support for the “Food Bank” campaign by dropping off items at the Food Bank box in front of Cold Storage on the lower ground floor of the shopping centre.
