Dengkil flood victims return home

FLOOD victims in Dengkil, Sepang are slowly going back to their homes after the flood had finally receded today.

The flood, which had affected close to 400 residents from six villages, started on Sunday.

The villages included Kampung Dengkil, Kampung Ampar Tenang, Kampung Revolusi Hijau, Kampung Lalang, Kampung Semarang and Kampung Seri Tanjung.

StarMetro visited the affected areas yesterday where most of the residents were seen cleaning their homes.

Kampung Revolusi Hijau resident Normah Ibrahim, 70, said that the floodwaters reached 1 metre high at its peak forcing her family to evacuate on Sunday morning with the help from the Civil Defence Department (JPAM).

“This was one of the worst floods in recent years,” she said, adding that the last flood in the areas was in 2012.

About 41 families had been staying at the Dewan Taman Gemilang relief centre since Sunday.

Dengkil district village chief Abdul Rahman Mohammad said that the residents had evacuated on Sunday and was allowed to return home on Tuesday.

“However, they had to evacuate again on Wednesday following heavy rain that flooded their homes for the second time,” he said.

According to Sepang district officer Roslinah Md Jani the relief centre had been ordered to close by 2pm yesterday.

“It is safe for the residents to go back to their homes as the water had receded,” Roslinah said when contacted by StarMetro.

She added that the flood was due to extraordinary heavy rain as well as failure of the drainage system.

“The district office and the Drainage and Irrigation Department are working closely to resolve the flood issue in Dengkil. We hope to be able to minimise the impact of the flooding on households by the end of the year,” she said.
