Spurring local authorities to provide five-star services

A MALAYSIAN Local Authorities Best Practice national conference will be heldat the TH Hotel & Convention Centre in Alor Setar, Kedah, from 8am to 5pm on May 30.

The event is jointly organised by the Malaysian Association of Local Authorities (Mala) and the Alor Setar City Council (MBAS).

Mala president Datuk Maimunah Mohd Sharif, who is also Seberang Prai Municipal Council (MPSP) president, said the theme of the conference was ‘Sharing TowardsFive-Star Services (Perkongsian Ke Arah Perkhidmatan Lima Bintang)’.

She said the conference was aimed at providing networking linkages among the staff members of local authorities about best practices.

“It will also disseminate the latestinformation on best practices among local authorities, both locally and overseas,” she told reporters on April 29 after chairing a MPSP full council meeting at the MPSP headquarters in Bandar Perda, Bukit Mertajam.

Also present were MPSP secretary Rozali Mohamud and MBAS Mayor Datuk Mat Noh Ahmad.

Among those who will present working papers at the conference are Dumingag Municipal Mayor Nacianceno M. Pacalioga Jr, from the Philippines, Malaysian Innovation Agency chief operating officer Naser Jaafar, Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Ministry Local Government Department director-general Dr Ab Rahman Awang and United Cities and Local Governments, Asia Pacificsecretary Dr Bernadia Irawati Tjandradewi from Indonesia.

Maimunah expected the conference to be attended by 500 participants, adding that the targetted group included local council mayors, presidents, secretariesand their employees, representativesfrom government agencies, government-linked companies, housing developers, non-governmental organisations, public university students and higher secondary school students.

The participation fees are RM200 for Mala members, RM300 for government agencies and the private sector, and RM50 for students.

For group participation, Mala members comprising five people and above will be charged RM750.

Participants from other local authorities in groups of five and above will be charged RM1,000.
