SIBU: People here are anxious to find out who will be the candidates for the remaining three seats.
On Wednesday, Chief Minister Tan Sri Adenan Satem announced in Kuching that Chieng Buong Toon would be the candidate for the Bukit Assek seat.
Adenan said he would reveal the candidates for Pelawan, Bawang Assan and Dudong later.
SUPP and its breakaway party, United People’s Party (UPP), have been tussling for these seats, with their respective potential candidates actively meeting with constituents for the past few months.
Potential SUPP candidates for these seats include Robert Lau Hui Yew for Bawang Assan, Datuk Seri Benny Lee (Dudong) and Michael Tiang (Pelawan) while those from UPP are Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh (Bawang Assan), Datuk Janet Lau (Pelawan) and Datuk Tiong Thai King for Dudong.
On March 19, Adenan announced that Dudong and Bawang Assan would be contested by Barisan Nasional direct candidates while for Bukit Assek and Pelawan he said, “UPP is ready to assist SUPP,” which indirectly meant that these two seats would be given to SUPP.
Adenan is expected to attend the KTS Group of Companies staff gathering today and reveal the names of the candidates.
However, it is strongly believed that the chief minister would only name candidates for Bawang Assan and Pelawan as he has been invited to attend the RH Group of Companies function next Thursday.
He is expected to announce Tiong, who is RH’s group executive director, as candidate for Dudong.
Later today, Adenan is expected to name the candidate for Repok at a meet-the-people session in Sarikei.
Three people are vying to represent Barisan at Repok. They are businessman Datuk Sri Huang Tiong Sii and Teng Ung Woo from SUPP and Chan Phan Chan from UPP.
Bukit Assek, Pelawan, Dudong and Repok were won by DAP in the last election.
