STUDENTS of a local college in Seri Kembangan were roped in to help out in a Street Cleanliness Campaign to inculcate in them a sense of social responsibility and volunteerism.
The campaign was organised by Portman College and the Zone 24 Residents Committee (JKP) under the Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ), with the support of non-governmental organisations Ikram and MyCare, and property developer Huayang Berhad.
About 200 volunteers from Portman College, Ikram and MyCare worked together to sweep the roads, remove illegal stickers and advertisements, and clean the drains around the Jalan Dagang SB commercial area in Taman Sungai Besi Indah, Seri Kembangan.
The campaign was organised with four objectives: to promote cleanliness among all stakeholders and develop a better environment around their premises, to promote recycling in the commercial area, to develop a sense of social responsibility among the students and business operators, and to promote a working relationship between the local government, private sector and civil society.
“We want to develop a better and cleaner environment to live and work in.
“In order to do that, we need the cooperation and support of all stakeholders, from the people on the streets to business owners and policy-makers,” said Zone 24 JKP chairman and MPSJ councillor Loka Ng.
“We wanted to get the college students involved as they are the future leaders and decision-makers.
“It’s important to instil a sense of social responsibility and volunteerism when they are at an age where they are still developing.”
Ng added that a monitoring group using the WhatsApp social tool had been set up to continuously monitor the area’s cleanliness.
The group comprised local stakeholders from surrounding premises, Zone 24 JKP members, MPSJ officers and cleaning contractors.
