Good response to fair


The good support from the public on the first day of Perak Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA) at Ipoh Parade on Friday.

THE three-day Perak Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (Matta) Fair held last weekend in Ipoh received overwhelming response.

This is the second time the fair is being held this year, with the first one held in March.

State Tourism and Culture Committee chair­man Datuk Nolee Ashilin Mohd Radzi said she was extremely pleased when told there were almost double the number of exhibitors compared to the fair held in March.

“I was told there were 101 travel agency booths, and other tourism related companies at the fair compared to 60 booths during the last fair.

“This just goes to show that Perak is on the right track, and the industry is picking up and doing better despite the global economic situation which is not doing that well.

“The sales revenue from the fair during the same period last year was RM30mil and I am sure it can hit RM40mil this time around,” she said during the launch of the fair at Ipoh Parade last Friday.

Present was Matta Perak chapter chairman Chooi Swee Poh.

Nolee Ashilin said Perak was rich in its heritage and natural treasures, and that such treasures should be promoted widely.

“I hope the Matta fair will help promote domestic destinations as well because there is so much to explore and see in Perak.

“We need key players including travel agents to be the ambassadors for the country and promote tourism,” she added.

During the event, Tourism Malaysia Perak also launched its ‘Cuti- Cuti 1Malaysia’ state level campaign themed “Dekat Je”, with about 30,000 visitors expected to attend the fair over the three-days.

Nolee Ashilin said with the state government’s intention to attract 5.5 million domestic and international tourists this year, the campaign theme was appropriate.

She said the state government has plans to develop tourism products, and upgrade the existing ones to attract more tourists to the state.

Chooi said the Matta Perak fair reflected unity as the players involved in the event comprised all races.

He said the fair this time had gathered a significantly good number of exhibitors.

“Visitors will definitely not go back disappointed as besides the great travel deals, there are lots of lucky dips, and door gifts to be won,” he added.
