PERAKIANS are excited and proud that Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah will be installed as the 35th Sultan of Perak today. The Star met up with several Perak folk to find out their thoughts and feelings of this day in history, and what it means for them to have such a dynamic leader as their Ruler.
“We are very fortunate to have a Sultan who is intellectual, knowledgeable and has superior qualifications, which is evident through his annual lectures and recent appointment as United Nations High-Level Panel on Humanitarian Financing co-chair.
“His Royal Highness has a heart for the people. He is very close to his subjects as can be seen during the many programmes that he attends. At these events, he always takes time to greet his subjects. Even a downpour and being soaked did not deter him from continuing on in a cycling event with the rakyat.
His visit to flood stricken areas, and Chinese and orang asli villagers where he went door-to-door to meet the people, and visit to an illegal dumpsite, also shows how much he cares for his subjects’ well-being. His humility has certainly touched many hearts, mine included. He is truly an inspiration.
“I foresee Perak moving forward rapidly in all aspects with Sultan Nazrin Shah as our Ruler. He is a good guiding example for the state government and because of this, I will do my very best for the state and nation. I would also like to wish Tuanku abundant health and blessings always.” – State executive councillor and Perak MCA chief Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon.
“Sultan Nazrin Shah is a very kind and approachable Ruler. While he is highly intellectual and cares deeply for his subjects, he is also a capable leader, who will lead Perak in the right direction in terms of development.
“Sultan Nazrin Shah will transform the state to becoming industry-based, even though we are an inland state, by pushing for a new international airport in Seri Iskandar. That way, there will not only be more tourist arrivals but Perak will also become a centre for hi-tech industries. Our new Sultan will bring greater development to the state and at the same time, help to increase the income and living standard of our people.
“I knew his father, the late Sultan of Perak Sultan Azlan Shah, quite well but I’ve yet to officially meet Sultan Nazrin Shah. I’m looking forward to doing so and hope to welcome him to Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (Utar) campus in Kampar.” – Three-term ex-Kampar MP Tan Sri Hew See Tong.
“Our new Sultan is a scholar, is very learned and with a keen and analytical mind. He has the right values, is very caring and empathetic, as well as affable and approachable. He is well liked by his subjects and very well respected by the international community as seen in his appointment to many influential posts. I think Perakians are very blessed to have him as our Sultan. I think all of us are fortunate and proud to have such a great individual as our Ruler.” – Lee Eye Centre chairman Datuk Dr Y.C. Lee.
“I am proud to be Speaker of the State Legislative Assembly during the time of Sultan Nazrin Shah’s installation as Sultan of Perak. I have been following his deliveries in conferences and forums and I am ignited by his intelligence. His presentations are ever so well thought of, his analysis of issues and depth of knowledge are to me, very admirable.
“His stature and intelligence also brings respect to the monarchy. People from all social strata look up to him as a man of substance and figure of respect. That is very important for the governance of any government.
“From my interaction with Sultan Nazrin Shah, he is a man of few words, is soft spoken and cordial. He is approachable and is open to others sharing their thoughts. During the recent devastating floods, I saw him as a truly simple man. The Sultan and his consort sat on the floor with the victims, they visited the communal kitchen where food was being cooked and actually walked through mud to be with the ordinary people. On more than one occasion, people got all excited at the sight of the royal couple and Sultan Nazrin Shah actually allowed them to take selfies with him.
Just like how Prince William and Kate Middleton of the United Kingdom have rejuvenated the monarchy, Sultan Nazrin Shah and the Raja Permaisuri Perak Tuanku Zara Salim have also changed our people’s perception of the monarchy.
“I am very happy to serve under Sultan Nazrin Shah. I salute and congratulate him. I hope he will always be the balancing factor between the judiciary, legislative and executive, and that he will be custodian of the three fundamentals of governance, which are transparency, accountability and delivery.” – Perak Legislative Assembly Speaker Datuk Seri S.K. Devamany.
“We are most appreciative of a monarchy that is supportive of the rule of Law. In fact, Sultan Nazrin Shah and his late father, Sultan Azlan Shah, are highly regarded and appreciated not only because of their royal blood but because of their education and intelligence. With the new Ruler’s extremely good looks (and that of the Raja Permaisuri Perak as well) and his frequent sincere propagation to the adherence to the Law, we do have a near perfect monarch in Perak. Together with all of us, management and staff of The Haven, we extend our most humble “Salam” and service. We know he will rule us well with wisdom and fairness.” – The Haven Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Peter Chan.
“Our new Sultan is kind and fair to all, regardless of the person’s race. From what I’ve read about him and seen in the news, he is soft-spoken and humble. He readily and sincerely greets his subjects without a care if they are rich or poor.” – Bread seller Nurul Ain Mohd Shariff, 32.
“I’ve met the Sultan once and it was a memorable experience. There are no airs about the Sultan despite him being royalty. He is truly people-friendly and humble, and sensitive to the needs and welfare of his subjects. God willing, Perak will develop and progress even more with a Ruler like him.” – Veterinary services assistant officer Termizi Hussin, 56.
“The Sultan is highly educated and knowledgeable. This is truly a blessing for Perakians as things will be even better under his rule. I’m confident that the Sultan will give good guidance to our state government and ensure better performance on the part of the state administration.” – Businessman Wong Lean Eng, 73.
“I hope our new Sultan will bring about positive changes and help Perak move forward, not only in terms of development but also unity. I pray that he will be a Sultan for all races, for all people.” – Taxi driver V. Ravindran, 53.
“Being young and highly educated, I’m confident the Sultan will have more ideas to transform Perak into a more developed and progressive state. I hope he will help all his subjects who are in need, including taxi drivers.” – Taxi driver A. Ganesan, 48.
“I had the opportunity to meet the Sultan and his consort at the Kolej Islam in Kuala Kangsar during my convocation. They were very friendly and shook hands with everyone. It gives me great pride to have a caring Ruler who is constantly at the side of his subjects. I sincerely wish that the Sultan will steer the state towards greater heights and that Perak will be peaceful.” – Kindergarten teacher Nurul Atiqah Muhammad Aminuddin, 22.
