KUCHING: The state Forestry Department has seized 28,154 illegal logs worth an estimated RM10mil in the first three months of the year.
Chief Minister Tan Sri Adenan Satem said the seizures were made in 94 raids which had been carried out so far.
“The amount of royalty foregone on the illegal logs is RM1.4mil. We also confiscated 12 lorries, four barges, three ships, 11 excavators and a tractor,” he told reporters after a briefing with 21 state and Federal enforcement agencies at Wisma Bapa Malaysia here yesterday.
In addition, he said, 55 people were being investigated for illegal logging activities.
Conveying his appreciation to the departments and agencies conducting joint operations, Adenan said the efforts against illegal logging would go on.
“We will continue to do this. We have achieved some degree of success but there is still a lot to be done,” he said.
State forestry director Sapuan Ahmad said those under investigation were workers who had been carrying out illegal timber activities.
“They are mostly local but some are foreigners. We will bring them to court to be prosecuted,” he said.
