SIBU: PKR Kanowit and Lanang Divisions have come out with an avenue for voters to object the proposal by the Election Commission to increase the number of state constituencies by 11 to 82.
The proposed new seats are Batu Kitang, Stakan, Serembu, Triboh, Gedong, Kabong, Tellian, Selirik, Murum, Samalaju and Long Lama.
EC state director Datuk Takun Sunggah had on Tuesday said objections could be raised by registered voters, local authorities and the state government during a one-month period when the notice of the proposal is displayed for public viewing or during the appeal period after the EC has studied the objections received.
Kanowit Division secretary George Chen told a press conference yesterday that they had printed an objection form for the public, expecially voters who would like to show their disapproval to the matter.
He said the forms were available at all the party 29 divisions in the state.
“All they need to do is just to fill in their name, voting constituency, identity card number, address and signed on the form,” he added.
Chen said PKR was against the delineation exercise as it was giving the state Barisan an unfair advantage, as the 11 new seats are in the rural areas where the BN has strong support from the voters.
“BN is in collaboration with the EC in working without the consent of the opposition in going ahead with the delineation exercise. It is very unfair and undemocratic and to a certain extent an abuse of power,” he added.
He urged political parties, be it from the opposition or Barisan who felt that the delineation exercise should be scrapped, to come forward by showing their displeasure through the objection form.
The form, he said, must be submitted to them before Feb 5 so that they would have time to forward it to EC.
