AS a nation gets more affluent, there will be more attempts to build cultural capital as a means of instilling patriotism and nurturing social development. 

Public institutions are very often directed by a government cultural policy while corporate-supported galleries typically showcase the work of more established rather than experimental artists. These establishments, together with commercial galleries such as Art Salon, Valentine Willie Fine Art and NN Gallery have formed the backbone of the Malaysian visual arts scene in the last decade.
