Make a colourful pom pom rug for the bedroom.
MAKING pom poms is one of the niftiest craft tricks ever – last year, we shared how you could make dozens of these colourful balls by winding yarn over a fork. This time around, we’re making it even simpler: just use your bare hands!
Apart from making a pom pom garland, how about putting a whole lot of them together to make a quirky rug for the bedroom? It’s the fastest way to add a dash of colour to your boudoir, and the process is as easy as it gets. Experiment with different types of yarn.
The only other thing you’ll need is a non-slip sheet that you can trim to size, which should be available at the hardware store.
Get everyone in the family to help with making the pom poms and you’ll be done in half the time.

Skill level: EasyTime required: Two hours
1 Cut the non-slip sheet to a desired size. Set aside.
2 Start winding some yarn across your fingers, but not too tightly.
3 Continue winding till you get a thick and bulky bundle.
4 Snip off the yarn end and carefully remove the yarn pieces from your fingers.
5 Secure a wire gift tie tightly across the centre of the yarn piece. Twist to hold in place.
6 Cut another strand of yarn of about 30cm in length. Use it to tie across the centre of the yarn piece.
7 Turn the piece over. Bring the remaining yarn strand over, pull tightly and secure a double knot. Now you can remove the wire gift tie.
8 Bring your scissors in between the yarn loops to snip them off. Go all around the yarn piece. Make sure you don’t cut off the long yarn strands.
9 What you’ll have is a pom pom – give it a slight trim to fluff it up.
10 Repeat the steps to make more pom poms in different colours. Arrange them on the non-slip sheet.
11 Once you’re happy with the colour arrangement, tie each of the pom poms onto the non-slip sheet – thread the long yarn strands through the holes and secure with a double knot.
