Never-ending cycle

Dates are arbitrary until we attach some meaning to them. But whatever a day means, life goes on.

CONGRATULATIONS! You’ve made it to the end of another year. Pat yourself on the head. Give yourself a cookie. Great. So what happened? The economy had it’s troubles, strife turned to war in too many places, politicians lied, tragedy struck and people cried, and of course the world did not end despite what the Mayans said in their calendar. (Actually they just said their calendar would come to an end; someone else interpreted that as the end of the world.)
