One of the best ways to experience a destination is through its cuisine, and food festivals provide a good opportunity to sample a good variety of local dishes.

France, Barbados and the Bahamas are just a handful of places that will soon host some of the best-known food festivals around.

Lyon Street Food Festival

Where: Lyon, France

Renowned as the gastronomic capital of France, Lyon hosts the Street Food Festival in its historic Old Town every summer. This year, it runs from July 25 to 29.

There will be over 200 live cooking demonstrations, 440 hands-on workshops, and 60 music performances held during the duration of the festival.

Visitors get to sample dishes cooked by chefs from France, and different parts of the globe like South Korea, Spain, Nouvelle-Aquitaine (a French administration region) and Mexico.

Crop Over Festival

Where: Barbados

There is no better time to experience Barbados than during the Crop Over festival, taking place from July 5 to Aug 5 this year.

This annual cultural festival marks the end of the sugar cane harvest with a week of music, vibrant parades and markets brimming with local food and handmade crafts.

Don’t miss the Cohobblopot, a lively show where Kadooment band members showcase their colourful costumes with music and dancing.

The festival concludes with a street parade, dubbed the “Grand Kadooment”.

Pineapple Festival

Where: Eleuthera, the Bahamas

Each June, the sun-drenched island of Eleuthera in the Bahamas transforms into a juicy celebration.

First held in the 1980s, the Pineapple Festival takes place in Gregory Town, where the island comes to life with music, traditional Bahamian fare, cultural performances, and a whole lot of pineapple. It’s both a tribute to the farmers who sustain this tropical legacy and a celebration of community spirit.

Though this year’s festival has just passed, you can always plan for a trip next year.
