Raja Permaisuri Agong Tunku Hajah Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah has expressed her pride in wearing the baju kurung.
Her Majesty was responding to a recent uproar which started when a Dutch designer based in Malaysia, Lisette Scheers, said that she wanted to "see Malays dressing beautifully again” in a South China Morning Post interview.
Posting on Instagram, the Queen pointed out she wears the traditional dress everyday. While Her Majesty did not directly reference Scheers, the post included the controversial quote.
"My dream is to see the baju kurung return, to see Malays dressing beautifully again. I want people here to feel proud of their heritage," Scheers had stated.
The image used by Her Majesty was a snapshot of pictures posted by the founder of local label Cipta on Twitter. They featured his upcoming Raya collection.

The Malaysian public also showed solidarity, asserting that they do not need Scheers’ “dream of seeing the baju kurung return” because the traditional dress is held dearly. Twitter and Instagram became flooded with posts by people showing off their baju kurung.
Since the South China Morning Post story caught attention yesterday, there have been rallying calls for everyone to start wearing a baju kurung – and posting their OOTD (outfit of the day) online.
Scheers has since apologised for what she said, but it was not well-received by irate Malaysians.
