I’M an 18-year-old girl with sensitive, dry and oily skin. I can’t seem to find the right moisturiser and compact powder for myself.

I’ve tried almost all the well-known brands but they seem to make my skin oilier, and now I have blemishes and pimple scars.

It’s really frustrating because my skin is dark, so I can’t go out without using a moisturiser and compact powder as my skin will look dull and dry without them. – Ary

According to Cyndi Ng, Algotherm training manager, it’s not unusual for young women to experience excessive sebum production due to hormone imbalance, resulting in an oily skin condition. When the pores are filled with excess oil and dead skin cells, they become blocked more easily, and bacteria (Propionibacterium acne) proliferation causes skin inflammation and breakouts.

In addition, your sensitive, dry skin is caused by a deficient hydrolipid film, resulting in a thinner epidermis and a sense of discomfort.

A proper skincare routine is important, especially when you are dealing with more than one skin concern.

Start with cleansing, using Algotherm Comfort Gentle Cleansing Milk. It’s an efficient cleanser combined with relaxing and nourishing properties, suitable even for sensitive skin. Apply in a gentle circular motion on the entire face.

To refresh and soothe your skin, tone with Algotherm Comfort Micellar Lotion, an ultra-gentle lotion that’s perfect for sensitive skin.

Moisturising cannot be missed out even if you have an oily-blemish prone skin type. The best moisturiser for sensitive, oily skin is one that is lightweight, non-comedogenic (which means it won’t clog your pores) and oil-free.

Algotherm’s latest innovative skincare range has Algopure Purifying Mattifying Fluid, a lightweight fluid that is absorbed immediately into the skin, leaving it feeling refreshed.

It combats a dull complexion to give an immediate radiant glow. It’s formulated with a patent complex comprising two kinds of seaweed: Micro-algae Tetraselmis chui,

that reduces sebum by inhibiting 5-alpha reductase, and brown seaweed, Fucus spiralis, which decreases spot and inflammatory reaction.

Before applying the Purifying Mattfying Fluid, I recommend the Algopure Anti-Blemish Intensive Corrector that has anti-bacteria action and helps to reduce spots, blemishes and redness by 95%. This is to be applied locally on the spots.

For your weekly regimen, use Algopure Purifying Mask 2 –1 anti-dull complexion, an exfoliating mask that helps to absorb excessive sebum and unclogged congested pores.

The routine will ensure your skin is rebalanced so that your complexion becomes clear and radiant.

* Algotherm will be giving Ary an Algotherm Purifying Matifying Fluid worth RM220.

I HAVE tried many different concealers – both high-end ones and those from the pharmacy – unfortunately none work for me as they can’t cover up my dark circles. Can you recommend a concealer that has high coverage and will cover up the dark circles? – Sharon

Lisa Yap, Shu Uemura’s education manager, says that the skin around your eyes is supposed to be the thinnest, most sensitive and also, the driest area. The thin, delicate area around the eyes is also one of the first places where signs of ageing appear.

You need to protect this area from sun and environmental exposure as these can accelerate the ageing process.

For optimal skin health, try Shu Uemura’s skincare regimen to keep the skin around your eyes looking smooth and youthful.

Use Tsuya skin youth infusing eye concentrate as part of your beauty regimen as it will help smoothen the skin around the eye area and create the perfect canvas for your eye make-up.

Poor microcirculation means less oxygenated blood is being transported to the skin tissues, causing the skin to appear darker under the eye area.

Formulated with miracle Rhamnose to reactivate skin’s youth power switch, the eye concentrate draws on the goodness of Umaguri Saponin, known to optimise microcirculation, to tackle dark circles.

To cover your dark circles, Shu Uemura recommends using a combination of Gel Cealer 7YR Medium followed by Point Cealer 7YR Medium for optimal coverage.

Apply Gel Cealer with the pointed concealer brush on the dark eye circle area and blend using outward strokes.

Then, twist up to get just enough of the Point Cealer from the applicator head, and dab/lightly pat on the spots and dark eye circles with fingers to blend the concealer with the skin. The gliding formula combined with a sponge tip applicator enables a supreme “blend”, giving you the ultimate “camouflage in a flash”.

Last but not least, apply dual fit powder (Deep Beige) to set your make-up. This versatile dual powder creates an air-light veil that combats both shine and dryness on the visage.

* Shu Uemura will be giving Sharon a Shu Umeura Gel Cealer and Point Cealer altogether worth RM170.
